Rehabilitation

Most of the activities that we are involved in are learned when we see what others do. Sight is essentially for the purpose of learning. When someone looses sight, they must be retrained to do certain things e.g. walking, cooking, knitting etc. The retraining is because of the fact that the activities will not be aided by sight but other ways like touch etc. It is the above role that the rehabilitation department plays. The main activities under the department are: 1.Basic counselling 2.Orientation and mobility training 3.Activities of daily living 4.Basic agriculture and business skills training 5.Placement 6.Adaptive computer training BASIC COUNSELLING After loss of sight one becomes depressed and goes through a feeling of self denial. Basic counselling at this stage aims at restoring self confidence in the newly blinded clients. ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY Orientation is locating one self in the environment while mobility is the ability to move independently. This training equips the newly visually impaired person with skills to move around with a good degree of independence. ACTIVITY OF DAILY LIVING Here the newly visually impaired are retrained on how to do things they used to do with the help of sight for example, they are taught to cook by carefully using the senses of smell and hearing. PLACEMENT The placement function deals with reintegrating the newly blinded back into society, employment and learning institutions.
