Education Programme

KSB is mandated by the government to champion and coordinate educational matters of the visually impaired children. KSB support’s in the following areas:

  • Assistive devices for Totally blind and Low vision
  • Eyes screening for school going children
  • In coordination of Sponsorship program
  • Empowerment training and of Braille technicians and teachers
  • Empowerment of parents and care givers of the visually impaired children
  • Coordination and facilitation of learning for the education institutions be they special schools, integrated and inclusive schools and colleges

Korara Integrated school is both a pre-school, primary and secondary school located in Bomet County. The school was started in 1982. The special integrated unit, that admits visually impaired children, was started in 2011 through the help of Kenya Society For The Blind (KSB).The special integrated unit started with 7 learners with visual impairment (3 boys , 4 girls). Since then, the number of CWVI has risen to 52, with plans to enrol and accommodate total of 100 children, learning from Class 1 to 8 by 2016.

Bomet County has a total population of 889,447 as per census report. Out of this population, 4,218 are visually impaired (0-5yrs =306; 6-14yrs =809 and 3,103 are over 15yrs). Less than 100 children with visual impairment in the county are in school. Major causes of blindness include cataract, trachoma, posterior segment infections and corneal conditions. Before Korara (an integrated school) was established, parents of blind children took their children to Kibos in Kisumu or Thika in Kiambu. This made education for CWVI inaccessible, unaffordable and unsustainable for poor parents and guardians. Towards establishment of the school, KSB sponsored 6 teachers for Braille Skills training. The school now has 18 braille machines out of which only 7 are in working condition and 5 Low Vision Desks. The ratio of Braille to its users is 1:4. A Braille is a “MUST have” for touch readers. This means the school should have a one-to-one (1:1) ratio. With a donation of one extra Braille Machines the ratio has been lowered further. To facilitate the usage of the Braille machines in the school, a further donation of 10 reams of Braille papers is also given; 12 sun screen location

As mandated by the Act., KSB is the coordinating and implementing body of the Kenya Integrated Education Programme (KIEP) working in partnership with the Ministry of Education in Kenya (MOE) and Sight Saver International (SSI) through a tripartite agreement. The MOE is represented in the Board by an appointee of the Permanent secretary.

To support learning for the visually impaired, KSB works with government structure. The goal of KIEP is to increase the capacity of government education systems to identify and integrate learners with visual impairment in regular public schools.

KSB uses the integration approach to Education where learners with visual impairment learn alongside the sighted students. This enables the learners with Visual impairment exploit their full potential in class work and outdoor activities.

At the district level, activities are implemented through the District Education Assessment and Resource Centres and coordinated by a Visual Impairment Officers. Through KIEP, teachers are identified from the regular integrating schools and through collaboration with KISE, they are equipped with Braille and low vision skills to facilitate assessment, placement and support of learners with visual impairment in regular schools.

In the period 2012- 2016, KIEP focus is on “inclusive” and “integrated” education where students with special needs learning alongside students without special needs in regular schools and classes with appropriate supportive services.  Inclusion helps blind /low vision children go to schools within their own localities and interact with children within their own communities and adopt norms and values of their own communities.

Rehabilitation

 

KSB is mandated by KSB Act 251 to provide rehabilitation services for the irreversibly blind in Kenya. To do this, KSB works closely with registered civil services organizations (CSOs) in the disability sector and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Development which is represented in KSB Council by an appointee of the Permanent Secretary

To effectively offer comprehensive eye care services, KSB’s programmes have a rehabilitation component designed to ensure the totally blind are supported psychosocially, economically, physically to continues with their activities of daily living with minimal dependency in accordance with the WHO’s definition of health. KSB is implementing community based rehabilitation (CBR) programme and is working in partnership with several partners depending on areas of speciality including:

  1. Kenyatta National Hospital (biggest referral hospital) – treatment
  2. Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Training of Pharmacy
  3. Kenya Institute for Blind (KIB) – Learning materials
  4. Kenya Union of the Blind (KUB) – Economic empowerment
  5. Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) – Training of teachers
  6. African Braille Center (ABC) – Repair and servicing of Braille machines
  7. Daisy Eye Cancer Fund –Treatment of cancer

Persons who are irreversibly blind are trained to be economically productive by being provided with skills towards orientation and mobility, activities of daily living, basic agriculture and business skills training and placement for ICT trainees. This programme is also mandated to ensure the rights and dignity of the visually impaired is guaranteed through lobbying and advocacy work.
